Lasik eye surgery, also known as laser in situ keratomileusis, is the most commonly used surgical procedure in the United States for correcting vision disparities. Its enormous popularity is due in large part to the tremendous eyesight improvement it provides, fully eliminating the need for spectacles or contact lenses.

Lasik, as popular as it is, does entail some risk, and if you consider yourself a candidate for eye surgery, you should be aware of the advantages and cons of going under the laser. Let us begin with the bad news.

The Disadvantages of Lasik Surgery

The outcome is determined by the surgeon’s skill. 

Because the outcome of the surgery is only as excellent as the surgeon, do not be afraid to contact an experienced specialist, one who has performed a large number of surgeries with less disappointed patients (a track record of successful operations will count). The surgeon’s ability is critical since he will be removing sensitive eye tissues, and the modifications he makes will be permanent.

The surgeon will rebuild the cornea, the outer bulging dome of the eye. Even minor errors can affect the refractive capabilities of the cornea, causing long-term vision problems. Unsatisfactory surgery increases the likelihood of repeating the treatment or requiring corrective eyewear, which you want to avoid. 

The surgeon may remove more or less corneal tissue. 

Shortsightedness may worsen if too little corneal tissue is removed (an under-correction), causing you to struggle to see items that are far away. To remedy this issue, repeat surgery may be required.

If a larger piece of corneal tissue is removed than intended (overcorrection), the farsightedness (ability to see close objects) is affected, and the only way to fix such an error is to use glasses or contacts. Such a result contradicts the core goal of laser eye surgery: freedom from external visual aids.

Lasik does not guarantee that you will be free of spectacles and contact lenses. 

The difficulty of using external eyewear in sports and many other industries, as well as the desirability of wearing eyewear in the glamour business, is the most common reason for people to choose Lasik surgery.

Sportspeople, fashion models, and movie stars are increasingly turning to Lasik to address practical issues or to improve their cosmetic appearances. However, the eyesight clarity provided by Lasik is not permanent.
